Source before style
When we build on a living tradition, we research it before we stylise it. Deities carry attributes, colours, taboos and praise names that belong to communities who still use them. Getting that wrong is not an aesthetic error.
Tatsuniya Systems is a Nigerian company registered in Lagos to design, build and own interactive entertainment — and to do the software work that makes building it possible.
01 The name
It is the word for the stories told to children in the evening — the ones with a tortoise in them, or a spirit at a crossroads, or a king who asks the wrong question.
We chose it because it describes the raw material. Nigeria, and the continent around it, holds an enormous inherited library — Yoruba orisha, Hausa tatsuniyoyi, Igbo cosmology — and almost none of it has been given the production budget, systems design and technical care that other mythologies routinely receive.
The second half of the name is the correction. Systems is the promise that the folktale gets engineered properly: real architecture, real tooling, real release discipline. Stories are the input. Software is the craft.
We are a young company and we say so plainly. Tatsuniya Systems is newly registered and is building its first title now. What follows on this site is what exists and what is intended — nothing more.
02 How we work
These are the operating rules the studio was set up around.
01
When we build on a living tradition, we research it before we stylise it. Deities carry attributes, colours, taboos and praise names that belong to communities who still use them. Getting that wrong is not an aesthetic error.
02
Characters, worlds, engines and brands are registered and held by the company. Owning the asset is what turns a single title into a catalogue that can be licensed, adapted and carried into other media.
03
Version control, code review, staged environments and reproducible builds are not enterprise ceremony. They are the difference between a demo and a product, and they apply to games as much as to client work.
04
The studio is Nigerian and stays Nigerian. We hire, commission and train here, on the view that the people closest to these stories should be the ones paid to tell them.
